Summary:
This book is narrated by a 12-year-old boy named Salz who tells the story of his hometown in Germany that is Donna Jo Napoli's imagined story of the famous tale of the Pied Piper of Hamelin who rid the whole town of rats. No one knows what is making animals die suddenly, and what if humans are next? Salz himself suffers an illness readers later find out is cystic fibrosis. Readers get to see through Salz's eyes how the town is turned upside down by these events.
My Review:
I loved this book because it was very different than anything I had read. There aren't many young adult books I know of that are set in the 1200s. Living conditions were sometimes drastically different and opinions of remedies and different superstitions that Napoli describes let the readers feel a part of history that is sometimes not explored much in junior highs and high schools.
WARNING: There are vivid descriptions of diseases and fear spread throughout the town
