Summary: This raw and honest novel is diary of a fifteen-year-old girl's struggle with drug addiction. She is a self-concious teenage girl wanting to be accepted and make friends in her new hometown. After she accidentally drinks a soda laced with LSD, she finds the drugs to be an amazing experience and doesn't see why anyone would think they are harmful; she finds them beautiful. She is soon dragged into a horrific world of drug abuse, isolation, unstable living conditions, and dependency on shady characters . She is only able to confide in her journal as her choices have isolated those around her who can help.
Personal Review: Despite the fact that this book has vivid graphic details about the life of a drug addict, it is so honest that it needs to be read and understood. Reading the thoughts of someone in this terrible situation can help young adults realize they are not invincible, there are consequences for their actions and it is not easy to come back to a clean, drug-free life. So many young adults feel the way the narrator did - believing the personal fable that they are invincible and wont be affected by dependency and wont get hooked. Part of a personal fable is also believing no one else understand the situation they are in. This book bluntly leaves no room for doubt regarding how drugs can ruin a person's life and how they need open communication with those who love them.
WARNING: These are the first-hand, candid writings of a 15-year-old drug addict living in degrading conditions at times. There are constant drug references, occasional strong language and sexual/homosexual references.
