Blood Secret
By Kathryn Lasky
Summary:
Jerry has been living in charity homes since her mother's disappearance when she was 8 years old. Now she lives with her elderly great-great-Aunt Constanza in New Mexico. Since her mother's disappearance, Jerry has not been able to speak - the words just won't come out! In her aunt's basement she finds a trunk containing journals and belongings of her Jewish ancestors in Spain during the Spanish Inquisition and how they had to deal with loss of loved ones, their beliefs, and how they tried to regain their heritage. Jerry feels a connection with her ancestors and is able to see things that parallel her own life.
My Review:
This was an interesting way to present a subject I knew very little about. I have heard of the Spanish Inquisition but this story helped me see how it affected the everyday people through fictional journal entries. I loved the way Jerry was able to connect with her ancestors through this trunk and how it led her to become a better person.
WARNING: The personal accounts sometimes graphically explain death or torture to those who were not Catholic or who tried to practice their Jewish traditions and could be disturbing for some young readers.
